How 50 cents can change your life.
You know the times you want to make a change in your life and think "yeaah, this is gonna be the real game-changer! I only need to change some of my habits and there we go! Super-me will be ready to go!". Then you're super motivated, know exactly what you want and then from one day to the next you totally change your routines, implement new ideas and then have all your shit together and life figured out?
Yeah, me neither.
And you know what? That's okay.
Changing habits isn't like changing a seating order at a table, it requires a lot of work, drive and discipline.
If you're having problems motivating yourself to do certain things, you'd like to change in your life, I have a little hack for you:
Think of something you would like to change - only things you can actually influence
In the morning, after rubbing the sleep out of your eyes, pick a 50 cents coin (or any coin really, I just seem to have gotten stuck to 50cents...) and flip the coin
If it says heads: you implement your change on that day
If it says tails: you don't have to do anything differently that day
Same thing tomorrow and the day after and so on...
So, the method behind it is: The coin decides whether or not you will actually change something every day you flip it. That weight is off your shoulders. It gives you a 50% chance of following your goals every single day which probably increases the probability of you actually following up on your plans a lot faster.
I'd love to hear about the effect this method has on your plans!
Here's an example:
I want to implement a new routine for my mental health. The first step I would like to take is to take more time for myself everyday. My plan is to do that by going for a walk everyday.
I rub my sleep out of my eyes and flip a 50cents-coin.
It says heads: Yipiie! I get to go for a walk today! --> I actively schedule the walk into my day plan.
It says tails: Okay! So I don't have to walk and get another 30 minutes I can really use for writing this blog. What a relief.... I guess...? Man, actually this kind of bums me out. I wanted to go for a walk. Fuck those 50 cents! I'm going anyways.
Congratulations, you're one step closer to finding your intrinsic motivation and discipline to implement your plans - for real this time!
